The Pipe Equipment Pressure Tight Towing Head is one of a range of Towing Heads which the company manufactures to provide a quick, simple and reliable method of attaching a winch wire, or other pulling device, to a plastic pipe. Towing Heads avoid the need to cut into the pipe or the fusing of additional fittings in order to gain a pulling fixture. Removal is also simply and quickly carried out.
A number of different types of Towing Heads (also known as Pulling Heads) are manufactured to suit differing applications. They are all reusable and based on the “Vick” expanding internal gripper design which works on the principle that the harder the pull the tighter the grip. This design was first produced in 1985 and has since been successfully used throughout the world.
All models are manufactured to a high specification using good quality steels and aluminium. They are zinc plated for corrosion protection.
The Pressure Tight Towing Head incorporates a sealing ring, which enables it to be tested against during the pressure testing of pipes. Hence after the installation of a pipe the Towing Head can remain in-situ to act as a pressure tight cap, thereby avoiding the need for extra fittings and jointing operations.
This sealing ring also prevents the ingress of dirt and fluids into the pipe. This is particularly useful when using pipes that have been pre-chlorinated or installing pipes where fluids are present.
Each Pressure Tight Towing Head is designed for one wall thickness (SDR) of a given pipe size. They are manufactured to suit all types and makes of plastic pipe in the size range 25mm (1″) to 630mm (24″), with specific sizes being manufactured to suit pipes in all countries. Stocks are maintained of all common sizes.
The Pressure Tight Towing Head has undergone a comprehensive series of tensile and pressure tests (both internal and external) to ensure that it is suitable for this particular application. All sizes are designed to withstand an internal pressure of 10 bar and smaller sizes (up to 125mm) have been found to be pressure tight to burst pressure of the pipe (47 bar).
